This project was a finalist for the Alberta CISC steel design awards in 2011. It involved expansion of Supreme Steel’s Bridge Division plant in east Edmonton to double the facility’s capacity. One of the challenges was keeping the existing crane runway fully operational during construction. The project consisted of designing a new crane runway along the south side of the existing shop to support four 40-tonne cranes running in tandem. It also included the design of a building structure to enclose the west end of the existing crane runway, expanding the enclosed area by 50 percent. Finally, a 100-foot opening was created between the west end of the new crane runway and the existing crane runway to allow passage of fabricated built-up plate girders from one runway to the next in their production cycle. Services during construction were also provided for this project.
