GeoMetrix was appointed by PK Developments and Kerr Interior Systems to undertake the structural design and construction review services for both the substructure and superstructure of this two storey residential building using load bearing steel stud framing. A main challenge for the design was the desire for full height windows with a shallow plenum space. This constraint prevented conventional header beams to be used over the windows. To solve this issue, a box beam was used to cap the ends of the light gauge steel floor joists. Another unique feature of this building is the hanging stairs providing access to the roof patio. This unique design involved designing the steel studs framing above the stairs as a hanger system, giving the appearance of floating stairs.
