Alberta Transportation retained GeoMetrix for bridge inspection, survey, preliminary engineering, detailed design, and construction services for rehabilitation of the two North Saskatchewan River Bridges on Highway 60 (BF 73694 N/S), near Devon. The primary concern that triggered the rehabilitation for the bridges was deterioration of the finger joints and deck overlay. After a thorough bridge inspection and careful study of the record drawings GeoMetrix identified the root of the fatigue problem: the rocker bearings can only accommodate horizontal movement while the finger joints are installed along 2.5% vertical grade. This finding has been confirmed with mathematical analysis and field measurements. This incompatibility causes high fatigue stresses in the finger plates. GeoMetrix proposed a new modular deck joint system to replace the fatigued and failing finger joint, and a new Hot Rubberized Membrane and Asphalt overlay system.
