Aurora Charter School Addition

This building is a two story library addition to the Aurora Charter School. The building is framed with structural steel beams and columns supported on cast in place end bearing piles friction piles and grade beams. The second floor diaphragm consists of OWSJ supporting concrete on metal deck, and the roof framing is OWSJ supporting metal deck.

GeoMetrix was retained by Burgess Bredo Architects to undertake the structural design and construction review services for the new two-story library addition on Aurora Charter School. Renovations include approximately 736 square meter two story classroom and library addition, and approximately 180 square meters of second story addition on the existing roof structure.

Structural components of the design phase include: foundation (concrete piles and grade beam), structural steel beam and columns, floor and roof diaphragms, assessment of existing structure to take new loads, strengthening of existing structure including CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) wrap for strengthening of shear and longitudinal reinforcement on existing precast prestressed double tee girders, and masonry wall design. The renovation also required a new snowshed over the existing roof structure to reduce loading from snow shadows.
